High school innovators pitch social impact projects at UC Berkeley
In April, SCET hosted 18 energetic high school students from The Purpose Academy in India. The Purpose Academy is part of One Million One Billion (1M1B) an SCET global partner.
These students came to SCET to build their entrepreneurship skills and pitch their social impact projects to mentors, faculty and local high school students.
The student’s projects focused on rural Indian communities and encompassed organic and other farming techniques, quantum computing, women’s small business creation, clean water technology, micro-loans and many other innovative topics.
While developing their projects, many of the students were able to raise funding and learn first-hand how to pitch their ideas through trial and error.
We were also fortunate to host 10 BioEHSC™ high school students. BioEHSC™ is an annual team research and design competition, taking place every spring and hosted by the UC Berkeley Bioengineering Honor Society. The students presented their projects on alternative lupus treatment, type 1 diabetes treatment, and alleviating Parkinson’s disease symptoms.
On the final day of their visit, the group recognized Hawa Diallo of the United Nations Civil Society Unit for her many years of service for youth throughout the world.
The Purpose Academy students also sat in on several SCET classes, toured campus, and hiked the Big C.
We look forward to hearing how all of their great ideas progress in the coming months!
